Group under the white tarp?

There's a group of people that hang out and around a white tarp or sheet fairly fair North. Anyone here from that group?

This ties into the Camera Perv issue...

That roped-off white tarp area seems to be kind of a "safe zone" for women, and I do understand that that's valuable because there are plenty of creeps there. For better or worse, the main guy with that group acts as anti-photo police for the beach. My personal experience with him was pretty awful:

I needed a pic of a doll in front of the GG Bridge for a project I was doing, so brought the doll and my camera to Baker Beach for the best possible shot of the bridge. I was cautious not to get any humans, nude or clothed, into my photos. That guy stormed over to me quite aggressively and accused me of photographing nude women (not very likely, in my case). Basically, he physically threatened me and told me to leave the beach and stay away. I calmed him down long enough to get him to look at the digital pics I had on my camera -- an invasion of my privacy, if you ask me. He backed off, but without even an apology. His threat of physical violence is, in my opinion, an even bigger problem than invasive photography... especially when said photography is purely in the imagination of a self-appointed cop.

For what it's worth, I'm a regular at the beach, and was nude at the time -- not that that should make any difference.

Funny thing is.....I've had the same problem with a guy in that area as well. I use the beach for nude photography with models, clothed photography with models, and nude sunbathing. I'm there often.

After I was threatened I explained that I was not shooting them and that if he truly did try to take my camera and throw into the surf (Hasselblad with an 80 mm lens) that I would one report him and two he would have to fight like hell to get the camera.

If the man had a brain larger than his penis (he was nothing special) he would have not said a word because an 80mm lens on a Hassy would not have gotten anything worth the time.

Again, I like the group except for this one dude that was not the sharpest tool in the shed.

IMO, they seem pretty insurlar. Which, I suppose, is the point.

Frankly, with the recent post of more voyeur photos to the net off this beach, I'm glad they are as watchful as they are.
I've been welcomed by the crew over there, and still recommend anyone who doesn't wish their nude self posted to the net to find themselves there...

Watchful, yes, that's a good thing. But threatening violence, especially when people aren't even taking the kind of photos they''re worried about... well, that just makes trhe beach an unpleasant and physically unsafe place. The guy is a bully.

Just like some bars in the mission would throw you out for talking on a cell phone,
cameras are not always welcome everywhere.

Except that a bar is a privately owned establishment, and the beach being a public location.
(I'm not advocating shooting photos of others unsuspectingly, just sayin'.)

Unlike bars, the beach is a public place and no one individual gets to set rules that have nothing to do with the law. I agree that it's morally wrong to secretly take pics of naked people, and I would never do so. But the bottom line is that it's not illegal to photograph in public, and when I get naked in public I accept the risk of being photographed. That's not an opinion, it's a fact. The beach provides one of the best views of the GGB for photography, and people certainly have a right to take photos of their family & friends at the beach. So who gets to say No Cameras?

If the person in question were approaching people with cameras in a calm and non-threatening manner to discuss the situation -- or if he were even taking care to make sure that the photographers he's threatening to beat up were actually photographing unsuspecting nudes -- then at least his vigilante-type actions would have a purpose. As it is, he has made himself as much of a creep as the people who are taking inappropriate photos.

MT: Who (and how) would you suggest approaching?

And: Taking pictures of others in public isn't illegal. But posting them to commerical sites (without a release) is grounds for being sued.

              Weazie....
My two cents..... Make sure you know somthing about photography or cameras.....In my case the lens was a wide angle and could not have taken a decient shot at the distance..... So to threaten me when 1) I was not shooting in their direction and 2) the lens was way to short, was foolish and it totally spoiled my day....

I really think many of the shots that show up on the net are being done via a camcorder in a backpack..... I've seen guys sit near the women on the beach and put down a backpack......

If I was with some women who were being shot or video taped I'd probably approach the guy and encourage him not to shoot because it doing so just is not cool....see whre that gets you and if that gets you no where and you are very sure of yourself....then turn up the heat.....but don't start with the heat on as was done in my case.
